This online British Museum event features Steve Martin who co-curated the Black Greenwich Pensioners exhibition: ‘Beyond Bridgerton’.
This panel discussion will explore the real stories of Africans and people of African descent in Regency-era Britain and beyond.The conversation will focus on why the series has been so popular, the reality behind the fantasy of Bridgerton, and if museums can form the link between fantasy and reality to foster a deeper understanding of our complex and shared history.The speakers include authors and historians Olivette Otele, Professor of History of Slavery and Memory of Enslavement at the University of Bristol, and S I Martin, who is also a heritage consultant. They join the creators and curators of the Era of Reclamation series, writer and broadcaster Bonnie Greer and Museum Director Hartwig Fischer. The link for booking is:
